MoEF Suno-Chalo : People?s Demand to the Ministry |
People's representation at the Ministry of Environment and Forests against the proposed dilution of Environmental Impact Assessment.
In November 2005, 200 members of Campaign for Environmental Justice in India (CEJ-I) protested against the 2005 draft environmental impact assessment (EIA) notification. CEI-J is a coalition of various environmental and community organizations that has evolved to collectively respond to unfair practices of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).
The public hearing called MoEF-Suno showcased more than 25 examples of inadequate EIAs in several industrial and infrastructural projects. The next day, people marched to the Paryavaran Bhavan and staged a dharna demanding the scrapping of the EIA notification and the draft National Environmental Policy, formulated with little public consultation. Project affected communities from all over the country were present. AID has worked in the past with many of the NGOs who are part of CEJ-I, including AID-Saathi Leo Saldhana of Environmental Support Group.
Dharna held at MoEF, Nov. 14th, 2005
