Corporates have a pivotal role to play in shouldering the social responsibility, so much so that many multinationals have started implementing CSR. It is not just about the corporate alliance with external social organizations like NGOs, but also looking inside their own organization as an idea of good corporate citizenship. To give due importance to CSR and to increase awareness are the two important areas where AID has just begun to establish itself as an agent of change.
AID Delhi aims to influence the behaviour of multinationals towards CSR. Assuming a relationship-building role in this direction, AID has made efforts to understand the companies’ work culture and their vision. It was also stressed that AID volunteers as employees would be in an advantageous situation where intervention might be required to prepare proposals which gives an overview of different activities that can be taken by the company with AID’s support.
Encouraging a voluntary role on the part of MNCs, AID can encourage corporates to organize seminars on the benefits of car pooling, use of recycled paper, say no to plastic campaigns, blood donation camps etc. These are some of the programs, which have very little, or no extra costs associated with them. Presentations backed by cost benefit analysis for water conservation, waste management, rainwater harvesting, use of solar heaters etc. have been very well received by STMicroelectronics.
Moving to CSR as a relationship building measure, the following approaches have been identified. - Top-down approach: Involvement of the HR in developmental issues and regular visits to the centre by HR representatives can help sensitize the department and management heads towards their responsibility as also to develop the trust and accountability to support the initiative. - Bottom-up approach: AID Delhi chapter has been interacting with employees, encouraging them to volunteer. Building a critical mass inside the organization and working strategically to take it to the management level can be another way to reach out to the multinationals.
To make a paradigm shift from "donations" to "earnings", AID Delhi has encouraged the masalas and handicraft stalls at various companies like STMicroelectronics, Atrenta, Cadence, HCL, TCS, etc.
The aim of CSR is to involve the corporate sector in local projects on environmental and social issues. Here, AID can act as a dynamic, interactive, and a reliable bridge between the corporates (including the employees) and the ongoing local socially conscious projects.
