Talk on Bhopal Gas Tragedy by Suroopa
'We for Bhopal' is a group of activists working on the issue of Bhopal Gas tragedy. Its members comprise of students and alumni of The Hindu College, Delhi University. Suroopa, the coordinator of the group, presented the case and the efforts being put up for the cause. She told that 'We for Bhopal' is a relatively young group which is not registered yet, but meets regularly for discussions and action planning. The actions which the group takes are mostly event based, like talks on the issue, documentary screenings, photo exhibitions and others. She cited the example of displaying the Raghu Rai’s pictures along the corridors of the college and asking other students to sign a petition and handprint a banner. The banner was later presented to the President of India. In another campaign, group performed a counter action in the ‘India Shining’ campaign during the last elections. On the India shining maps, they marked blots where India was not shining, as in Bhopal. Slowly other students started coming and pointing to the other areas where blots should be present and very soon the entire map got filled with blots.

Shahid Noor, a Bhopal tragedy orphan, was invited to interact with the group. Recently students also went to Bhopal themselves and stayed with the Bhopal victims. They shot a small documentary and later wrote a small, but intriguing book based on their first hand experience with the unfortunate souls. She emphasized that the main idea of all such activities is to sensitize the students and make them comfortable with the cause of Bhopal tragedy.
