Caring for the jewel: North East India

Handloom project in Assam

The seven states in the North East (NE) region of India - Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura – while rich in natural resources and survival traditions, have faced deteriorating economic conditions. In order to learn more about the rich cultural diversity of this region, AID has established the North East Cell, and is actively reaching out to establish long-term partnerships with like-minded groups.

AID has been actively involved in flood relief, education, health, women empowerment and livelihood generation programs in NE region. So far, AID has distributed about $34,000 to support various projects in Assam, Arunachal, and Meghalaya and plans to diversify to remaining NE states. We still have a long way to go before we can appreciate the rich cultural heritage, biodiversity and the strong role of women at the heart of every North East family!
