CHENNAI: School children and members of the Tamilnadu Science Forum protested against the Coca Cola bottling plant in Gangaikondan on the Tamiraparani at the Pachaiyappa's High School here on Thursday afternoon.

The bottling plant in the Tirunelveli district is said to be drawing around 6 lakh litres of water a day paying one paise per litre.

Students from the school held placards urging the public to drink natural refreshments and protect the environment and groundwater. The protest was held to coincide with the commemoration of the death of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, freedom fighters.

Speakers said multi-nationals gave very little employment opportunities for local people, but spoilt natural resources. Participants took an oath to protect water, land and environmental resources, avoid multi-national soft drinks and drink buttermilk and tender coconut instead.
