Bhopalis march into Delhi |
|
Why did the Bhopalis decide to march now? For twenty two years, the survivors have seen empty promises and deliberations from their government. Last year, they decided to march and meet the PM in Delhi, vowing not to return until the demands were met. Why march on foot? Why not take a train to Delhi? The Bhopalis wanted to expose the fact that the government really did not care about their demands despite them walking all the way to Delhi. Also, they wished to meet similarly affected communities on the way. For instance, they met the villages affected by the Coke factory in Pillookhedi. The response was overwhelming. What were their demands? They had six demands for the PM: - Set up a National commission on Bhopal
- Provide safe drinking water
- Prosecute Union Carbide
- Make Dow clean up and pay.
- Blacklist Dow and Union Carbide
- Memorialize the disaster.
What was the government's attitude?
- On day 5 of the hunger fast, the PM's office told the marchers that the PM could not meet them due to "a flu". The marchers found out he had other appointments that day.
- In the PM's own words when he met the marchers: "I don't promise to persecute. We have to do business. India has to survive despite these tragedies."
What did the satyagraha achieve? The PM agreed to all demands except #3 and #5 (the ones that explicitly mention Dow). He agreed that clean up is necessary and that it will be done. Gulab bai thanks Satish, minutes before he ended his week-long fast. (Photo courtesy: Bhopal.net) |
What next? The Bhopalis plan to keep up the campaign until the promises are kept. Also, they plan to prevent Dow from expanding its business in India until it can behave as a responsible corporation.
