Recent Events in AID

On April 14th 2006, AID-Pittsburgh presented a fundraiser concert by Sarod legend Amjad Ali Khan at the intimately grand Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh. An overwhelming and very responsive audience of about 850 attended the concert by maestro Khan and his sons, accompanied by two Tabla players. Volunteers had worked hard to publicize the event widely, trying several novel avenues of marketing, and the concert also received press coverage from several of Pittsburgh's newspapers. On concert day the large and beautiful foyer of the music hall wore a festive look, with several posters showcasing AID's work, and booths for other non-profits as well. A special luncheon the following day honored the artistes, sponsors and patrons. The chapter raised more than $18,000 from the event, and more importantly has received recognition and kudos from the community at large for its organizing abilities.

On April 29th 2006, AID-Portland hosted Ina Mina Dika by Seattle’s popular group, Shruti. Proceeds from the concert will support the Patna Slum Education to promote holistic development in 9 slums in Patna through education, social, economical, political and organizational upliftment of their mothers.

On May 31st, 2006, AID-Tempe presented an evening of Bharatnatyam dance with Srimathy Mohan and her disciples, of Silambam, Phoenix, Arizona. Proceeds of the concert will go towards construction of the Phase 1 of the Eureka Model School project in Vembakkam, TN as part of the Hundred Block Plan’s efforts in literacy.

In June, 2006, AID Milwaukee conducted its fifth annual 8-a-side cricket tournament in June 2006. With particapation from 15 teams and over 125 cricket enthusiasts, not only did we raise about $2,500 but it also gave the local community an oppurtunity to relive the Indian Cricket Spirit along with some tasty Indian food. We have learnt a lot in the past five years and are continually trying to improve this fundraiser to make it more enjoyable for volunteers and players. The tournament also provided us a platform to get new volunteers. The tournament was won by Infy Ace, who had defeated the defending champions en route to the finals. The opponents, Mr Hitters, put up a good fight but succumbed to a better team at the end of the day. Taking home a trophy and certificate from AID was considered prized by both the teams and was enough motivation to come back and play next year.

On June 17, 2006, AID Philadelphia hosted a one day forestry issues workshop with SR Hiremath with around thirty volunteers from several regional chapters. The workshop gave us a working knowledge of forest issues with historical perspective; key activists and movements, court judgments or policy changes; current struggles on the issue and current government perspectives; new changes in the horizon; how to get connected and what we can do. The workshop included a session on interactive games and team activities which are used as training in non-violent action and community organizing for social change.

During the Summer 2006, AID Boston/Metrowest joins with Asha Boston/MIT to start their fourth annual marathon fundraiser for fall marathons in Chicago, Cape Code, Washington DC and Hartford! Visit www.teamaidasha.org for more details.

September 15, 2006, AID Houston hosts the regional meeting of AID chapters.
