[UNDP] Bags in all shapes and sizes |

AID India's work was featured in UNDP's Tsunami newsletter . This is the first of two reports; this report appeared as a cover story.
In Devaneri, a fishing village on the east coast of southern India, families affected by the tsunami have found a new source of livelihood. After the disaster, fishermen did not return to the sea for several months. In addition to this lapse in income, it was also necessary to find an additional source of income during the off season.
Aid India, with support by UNDP, is running a project to help these families to rebuild their livelihoods through new income generating activities, such as making handbags. Women in the village are being trained to make handbags out of sail cloth. As soon as the training period is over, Aid India will sell and market the bags. With a targeted production of 35 bags a day, the women will earn a salary basis of $65 a day.
