From the Editor In this issue, we focus on the problem of Development induced Displacement. On the one hand there is the planned massive displacement of tribal and other populations caused by development projects such as the dams on River Narmada. On the other hand, there is the slow but continuous out-migration of rural populations that have been impoverished by the Government’s policies of rural development. The urban poor are also subject to “demolition drives”, such as the recent forced evictions in Mumbai where 90,000 homes were destroyed at the height of the Monsoons, rendering as many families destitute overnight. What is needed is an urgent re-evaluation of projects and policies that have caused the suffering of millions, while being justified in their very name. It is hoped that the National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM)’s ‘Anti displacement Forum’, a nation-wide campaign against evictions, will lead to a larger public debate on this issue and the formulation of more humane and just models of development.
