It is this editor’s opinion that poverty and corruption are two of the greatest problems of contemporary India. This issue is dedicated to a discussion of two pieces of landmark legislation, the RTI and NREGA, which are the Government of India’s attempts to address both these ills.
The Right to Information Act [RTI] gives an ordinary citizen the power to gain an understanding about the decision-making processes of the government. With the National Rural Employee Guarantee Act, the Government of India has ensured that there will be guaranteed pay for at least 100 days a year for the rural poor in return for manual unskilled labor.
While both these acts sound extremely promising on paper, their implementation needs to be monitored, and the public also needs to make full use of these acts. A number of AID’s NGO partners are working on these issues and we showcase a few such efforts in this issue of Parivartan.
