Gramin Lok Seva Mandal: Site visit report |
AID Boston Volunteer, Anup visits the GLSM project in Raigarh, Maharashtra.
The Gramin Lok Seva Mandal (GLSM), founded by Mr. Subhash Patil in Raigarh, Maharashtra, works with hearing impaired children in Karjat and the surrounding tribal areas.

Earlier this March, I visited the GLSM and interacted with Mr. Patil and his wife, Vimal Munde-Patil, who is professionally trained to work with hearing impaired children. Mr. Patil and Vimal tai teach the fifteen children currently at GLSM, activities like block printing, running the amber charkha and using sewing machines. The goal of this alternative education is to ensure an independent and secure future for the hearing impaired children. GLSM has also been instrumental in raising public awareness about the issues and rights of physically handicapped children and they would like to step up this effort by organizing workshops, distributing newsletters and booklets in the local community. AID has been supporting the efforts of the GLSM since 2003, funding $15420 till date which has been utilized for the procurement of a hearing aid machine, supporting teachers’ salaries and for some running costs such as electricity and water. - Anup Bandivadekar, AID Boston |
