Besides working with grassroots organisations in India, AID volunteers also make conscious efforts to bring about changes in their own lives. One such idea led volunteers to switch off their lights and electrical gadgets between 8pm and 9pm on 21st June. The word spread to family and friends – there were 100 participants from India, 134 from the US as well as a few participants from Canada, Australia, Tanzania, UAE, Switzerland, Pakistan and France. The collective effort potentially saved 600KWh that could light up an entire village for a day. In light of the encouraging participation, AID hopes to repeat this event. -- Somnath Mukherjee, Boston
