AID Supports Monsoon Relief In India |
AID reports on our latest flood-relief efforts, and thanks you for your support.
In what has become a grim reality on an annual basis during monsoon, this year too saw many parts of India experiencing floods that displaced and affected millions of people. Orissa, Bihar and UP were hit particularly hard in late July/early August with over half a million people in Orissa and over a million people in Bihar being stranded, not to mention the loss of property, shelter, agricultural crops and livelihood.
AID approved an amount of $20,000 towards flood relief in these regions and is working with "Local Governance" a Bihar/UP based group and with AID-Orissa in the Cuttack/Bhubaneshwar area. The broad goals of the flood relief effort were to provide food items, clothes and polythene sheets for shelter to those people and areas that the government could not reach.
So far, AID Orissa has been able to reach about 500 families in slum areas of Cuttack and 130 families in Kashinagar block of Gajapati district. While the immediate relief phase is over, the following requirements have been identified for the next phase:
- Polythene sheets in Cuttack
- Books/Note books for children
- Agricultural assistance
A strategy is being developed for the second phase and a survey is being conducted to estimate the quantum of support required so that these efforts can augment the work of the government and other groups in the area.
