TOFarM (Tamil Nadu Organic Farmers Movement), a group founded by AID Saathi Revathi, began working in Nagapatinam, TN during the Tsunami of 2004 and has remained close to the people there since. They have demonstrated many organic techniques including multi-seed sowing and zigzag farm arrangement to increase interaction between water and soil.
This season, more than a thousand farmers will go completely organic. Farmers reported that organic techniques have brought down their production costs, including labor hours. Their major hurdle is paucity of funds during crisis situations. Government policies provide for fertilizers, but offer no help to organic farmers. Realizing the need, TOFaRM, in collaboration with Oxfam have now formed two federations, one for farmers and one for farm workers, with a revolving fund of Rs. 40 Lakhs.
Conical nets allow vines to grow in smaller spaces. Goats tied to the center pole feed on fallen leaves and leave dung in return. TOFarM appeals for help in gathering information on topics such as organic techniques practiced around the globe, toxicity of pesticides, consumer movements, World Trade Organization and its impact on agriculture.
