In Orissa, small farmers, fisher-folk and workers defending their lands, lives and livelihoods from an upcoming steel plant are facing violence and state repression.  In Chhattisgarh, Binayak Sen, a doctor who graduated as a gold medalist from CMC Vellore and has been serving the poor in Chattisgarh for 30 years, has been jailed and awaiting trial since May 2007 on baseless charges of terrorism.
