Enquiry into Failing Anganwadi in Srikakulam

AnganwadiWhile discussing nutrition with women in Tolapi, Andhra Pradesh, we talked about the importance of eating well during pregnancy and nursing. Imagine a mother trying to nurse her child without getting enough food herself! Poor nutrition weakens women and stunts growth of their children. Breast milk is vital not only for its nutritional value, but also to prepare the immune and digestive systems of the child. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, and continuing until at least 24 months of age, and beyond.

IIndia’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) provides supplementary food-grains to pregnant women and new mothers to aid maternal nutrition. This extra nutrition could make the difference in a new mother’s decision to breastfeed her baby. Women in Tolapi told us that they had received nothing from the anganwadi during pregnancy or following childbirth. ICDS anganwadis serve children up to age 6, but most families had received nothing for their children either. Alarmed, AID-Srikakulam workers surveyed area families. In Tolapi village, 80 women signed a letter to the Collector of Srikakulam District, who ordered enquires. Now villagers are asking more from their anganwadi centers. AID has requested (via RTI Act) lists of anganwadi beneficiaries and benefits distributed. As people become aware of their rights, we expect to see anganwadi services improve.

Aravinda Pillalamari, an AID Jeevansaathi, works on integrated development in Srikakulam district.
