Himmat, Resource Center for Training and Development; Ahmedabad, Gujarat ($2,000; San Diego): Run by women survivors of Naroda-Patiya carnage, Himmat trains women in sewing and stitching. It also teaches art and theatre to help them tell their stories and engage civic society. Community Empowerment in Gumala District; AID-India; Ranchi, Jharkand ($9,013; College Park): Led by AID-Saathi Dayamani Barla, to help the tribal community find a foothold in society and share information to strengthen civic resistance. Promote livelihood rights through NREGA; Nisarga Trust; Visakha, Andhra Pradesh ($4,051; Tempe): To help local people apply for job cards, identify work opportunities, and get unemployment benefits, and also to get special benefits for disabled and pregnant women.
LSS Education Phase III; Prayas ($3,599; Austin): To help children get over homesickness and to prevent drop-outs from schools.
RTI Campaign in UP and Bihar; Asha Parivar ($14,177; College Park and Penn State): To hold awareness campaigns throughout the city to educate the community about their right to information, to campaign for the appointment of Public Information Officers in all departments, and to hold regular campaigns at each government agency.
